The 2011 Rubber Card

Poseidon and Harold The year 2011 continued the bifold cards, with the rubber card being the trifle more exotic of the two. My friend Wolf had suggested that I visit American Aquatic Gardens in New Orleans, purportedly to get a new statue of Hercules. Well, Hercules was “Spoken For”. But, next to the Garden entrance was this huge, muscular god whose surface could have passed for slimy, black rubber skin. Oh, my! Another pose of my absolute favorite Greco-Roman god, Poseidon. He was a rather controlling sort as he didn't let me go until I had made a deposit towards paying his ransome. Here's that photo, to the left. The caption was, “The newest kid on the Leather Oaks block has to be Poseidon! His coming required an elevated platform, as if he wasn't quite large enough. Perhaps you can suggest an analogue for his conch shell?”, followed by, “2011 Season's Greetings!”

The golf umbrella? I didn't have a trident, but at least it is water related.

The photo on the back of the card (shown to the right) had the caption, “Harold and Poseidon at rest.“.
Oh, did I forget to mention? Most of the photos have a larger version available by clicking on them.

Conversing with Poseidon

Poseidon has become a big hit at Leather Oaks. There have been several additional photo sessions. The best have to be these two from Sonya's visit in mid-April, 2011.

The 2011 Leather Card

And is it more or less conventional??

Blue leather and a bronze Horse      Most of the statues here at Leather Oaks have some seriously oversized egos. When Horse (Antoine Louis Barye's work, Arab on Horseback) heard that Poseidon was this year's poster rubberman, he demanded that he be afforded similar leatherman status. Well, I guess his scimitar-equipped belt might have been made of leather before it was bronzed!
Here's that card (to the left): the caption read as follows: “Horse lets me pose with him on condition that I polish his person. I know it sounds rather strange being put that way, but the nuances of the various bronze salts are highlighted rather effectively, don't you agree?” followed by the caption, “2011 Season's Greetings”.
At right is the photo that appeared on the rear of the card, along with the caption, “Horse and Harold”..
Horse is watching YOU!
