Leather Oaks Pond in a New Year      January first, 2006 finally arrived, but it was a rather gray day.
By this time, my friend Mike had cleared the fenceline to the North of the pond, and was in the process of filling in the tree root cavities. While none of those activities directly affected Leather Oaks Pond, they did change its view.
Those dead pine trees aren't nearly as close as they appear, being actually more than ten feet north of the property line. We had pushed everything closer out of the way. I think we may need a privacy fence along about here! Dead pine trees behind Leather Oaks Pond
Cloudy water in Leather Oaks Pond      It had been an exceptionally dry period after Katrina. Between that and all of the earth moving to repair damage and restore land contours, there was a lot of bare earth around.

Sure enough, on February 23rd, when we did get a sizable downpour, the Rubber Creek ran red! This photo shows Leather Oaks pond soon thereafter.

This photo shows more clearly where some of the discoloration came from. I had let Mike get a trifle too enthusiastic in building up the land just outside of my fence. Should have known which way water runs! Murky Leather Oaks pond overlooking red dirt breakline
Leather Oaks Pond in early Spring      This is much better! The second day of Spring, March 22nd, and we have iris in bloom!

The vantage point was carefully chosen to hide that red fill dirt.

Yes, we're definitely going to do a privacy fence. That's too big a contrast to be pleasant. Leather Oaks Pond in March 2005
Pipe's Privacy Screen      It appears that Pipe already has his own personal privacy screen.
This ends the Post Katrina Timeline! Please check out the Summer 2006 page to see how Leather Oaks looked by early summer of that year. You won't believe the change!
